It is Justus’ 30. birthday on the 23rd March 2011 – a little review on the life we spent with him!
Justus in Belgium in 2008
Back in 1993 at the yard where I kept Mirko a new horse arrived. I heard stories that he had an accident and was recovering from a snapped tendon. One of the first evenings I fed the horses and gave them hay. Justus who had been box rested for nearly a year at that time stepped politely back when I opened his box door and let me in. This politeness you could straight away see in his eyes. His owner had spent quite a bit of money and time on Justus to get him to recover from his injuries. Justus had been a successful show jumper under her, but it was unlikely that he could return to the show jumper circuit. Once he was lightly under saddle again his owner tried to sell him. I was moving house (including Mirko) at the time and said to her that I would take him as a companion to Mirko should she not be successful selling him. The new field I had hired actually was signposted “Justus” which was a manufacturer with the same name. So, we were joking that Justus would join us because of this. The same week I sent a postcard to his owner with our new address.
Within a week Justus arrived. No money exchanged hands but well a contract as to what Justus could do. Not much in the beginning, according to the vet we were only allowed to walk him and since I did not have any tack for him this was done in a head collar with two lead ropes. Gradually trot and canter was permitted by the vet and a few months past before we realized that it was perfectly fine to go anywhere without tack, but putting a bridle and a saddle on caused some issues.
Later that year we moved to Scotland Justus eventually accepted saddle and bridle and with the permission of the former owner I started competing him in dressage. For the next seven years he was a full time school horse and a competition horse. He taught numerous people riding and one of his specialties was bridleless riding with just a neckstrap. He has always been most control-able in a neckstrap only. So, relative beginners could manage a canter to halt transition though the could not if he was wearing his bridle. The same was true for performing circles. Over the years Justus developed a multitude of amusement factors, such as pretending to need a pee and therefore stopping in each and every single corner. He was notoriously known to leave the arena if the gate was open, but he courteously made a transition from canter to walk to do so. He was also quite a success in showing, especially with kids, who could not reach over the saddle flaps with their legs. The only downfall: He loved the loop of honour and would take off bucking.
He won a number of veteran classes (even than) and carried the side saddle as well as the Western saddle. I competed him up to Medium level dressage and in 2002 I passed my German silver riding mark on him in the dressage.
The very best thing about Justus is simply that he has always been totally trustworthy, very sweet and equipped with a sound sense of humor. In 2000 he came back with me to Germany to move in 2008 to Belgium and again back to Scotland in 2010. He is still under saddle and he still absolutely loves children:
