We are missing Justus a lot! Still I am grateful that I had the honour to spent half my life with him which outweighs the sadness I feel about having lost him. Thank you all for all your support and kind words about Jussi.

Kirstin Uhlenbrock Huluk is very good friends with Monkey, our 11/2 colt. They love being together, but I restrict this due to the fact that Huluk has no teeth and Monkey an appetite like Justus did. Huluk looks perfect and is very chirpy but in saying that so was Justus until the day I found him lying in the field,

Good Bye, Justus!!!

On the 7th of October 2011 I found Justus lying in his field. He recognized me and reacted, but he had very little breathing and could not get up. On the sight of his feed bucket he sat up, took a mouthful, started chewing and lay down again. The vet arrived and after examining him found he had very little heartbeat, little digestion and advised based on this to have him put to sleep. We agreed. Justus got his injection, took another three deep breaths and was gone. We are still under shock as he, fortunately, did not show any signs of weakness beforehand and as a matter of fact came up trotting for his feed bucket the evening prior.

He has for twenty years been part of my life and he was the kindest horse ever meet and still had a gentle cheekiness written all over him. He was till the end enjoying his life to the fullest and was even still ridden though he did admittedly got slower over the years.

We will miss him badly and imagine that where he went to he might have just started a discussion with Steve Jobs about Apple as he was that kind of person.

Yet another purpose for our 30 year old Justus… or it was just a nice ride

Finally, some good weather and as it is in Scotland one should try to make the best use of it while it is there. Since I am tied to the premises with our tack shop from 10am to 6pm. I ventured out at 6.30pm on well and long lasting serving Justus, who has just recovered from an injury caused by another horse to his right hint heel. He is back fully since a couple of days – Thank God!
To make the whole adventure a little more fun I took Monkey, our yearling colt, alongside.
I did have some minor obedience issues with the boy as he thinks it is great fun to try to jump on the ridden horse. It takes a bit of shouting and waving hands to settle this dispute and it was back in November 2010 that I had this combination out together. Even with Monkey’s dad Mirko this happens occasionally, but Mirko is a little more agile than Justus.
I can strongly recommend either a Western or a stock saddle as the horn can be of vital use if the little chap plants his feet.
I went from Aytounhill to Luthrie via a public footpath and then went along a quiet country road to Brunton from there I cut across passed Norman’s law back to Aytounhill. We met two joggers which Monkey found highly entertaining and the first car which passed us left Monkey in slight bullfighting mood, which had blown over by the arrival of the next car. We met a bunch of white dogs of which Monkey was initially not sure but since Justus did not give any reaction, Monkey decided it was not worth his while. Old Justus does no longer do well on the steep downhill bit coming from Norman’s law. So, I dismounted put Jussi’ reins over the horn of the saddle and let him come along on his own (away from any roads of course and separated by a closed gate). That provided me with a good half hour of leading exercises with Monkey, which cannot do any harm whatsoever. Here are some impression, which I hope you all will enjoy:

Daphne Pease’s Huluk, Welsh Section gelding turns 40!

Happy 40st Birthday, Huluk!!!

Huluk has only joined us here at MindBUZZler, Aytounhill in January 2011 after his owner died back in December 2010. So, we cannot take any credit for Huluk having gotten as old as he is today, but it is all down to Daphne’s tender loving care and possible huge amounts of pony nuts in all those horsey years. Fortunately, our Justus (who is ONLY 30) and Huluk had met earlier in life so changing home after thirty odd years has been a little less of a shock due to meeting his old friend Justus again.

Huluk is totally sound, very cheerful, but has lost all his teeth, so he gets a special diet, which Daphne worked out over the years. Daphne also created almost academic instructions as to how his feed has to be assembled. I took roughly 3 days to understand them properly and received some practical insights from Daphne’s daughter alongside with it.

Jutta Wiemer horse Peter is turning 32 today and her Beau is 28 this year. Both horses are featured in Jutta Wiemer’s book “From Leading to Liberty” and can also be seen in action in her videos “Playing with horses 1 & 2″

All of them live in Canada and are preparing a good birthday party if the weather commits we will hopefully see some gorgeous pictures as the one below of Peter of both of them.

Craigie Farm in South Queensferry is one of the livery yards with the most spectacular views and also gorgeous rides. I went over there for something different but ended up with the opportunity to ride one of my favourite veterans, Mungo, who I always had a soft spot for long before he turned to be a veteran.

Let us introduce some veterans: Rosie & Dutch Herb

Let me introduce to you two more agile veterans:

Below you see Rosie, a Hannovarian/TB mare bought as a 3 year old by Clare Blackburn.

Clare has enjoyed with Rosie endurance, dressage, jumping, cross country and also common rides. Rosie has also bred a wonderful foal to Broadstone Westcountry called Walter who has just turned seven.

Dutch Herb, better known as Herbie or Herbert was bred and owned by Daphne Pease. He is as his name suggests a Dutch Warmblood out of Mrs Tanzy VII by Flying Dutchman (son of the famous Dutch Courage Jennie Loriston-Clarke was so successful with.

Herbie has been with Clare for the past ten years and is enjoying dressage, teaching riders, endurance, pony clubbing and some jumping. Prior to that he was competed up to medium level dressage and fulfilled duties as a schoolmaster with Kirstin Uhlenbrock. Herbie is still heavily engaged in teaching riders, young and old, accompanying his sense of humor with a stunning freedom of movement. You are not advised to have lunch prior to boarding Herbie!

Our Mirko did perform a nice Medium test at the Fife Riding Club winter league yesterday (3rd of April 2011) after his initial Elementary in which he was more attentive to potential new herd members than to me his rider. It is -after all- spring
