Lindsay Mathers Equestrian Art Newsletter

With Blair Horse Trials well and truly underway in Perthshire it’s hard to not become immersed in everything equine. It’s even inspired me to have another studio clear out to get ready for making lots of new works. Many of them inspired by this years abundance of foals – I’m so lucky to live where I do, surrounded by horses. Not to mention the many equestrian events that have been taking place in Scotland – the Royal Highland show, Blair of course. This years Fife show had many stunning entries and thankfully the rain stayed off long enough to fill my camera memory with inspiration. Even cross country events at Kinnaird. So with all this inspiration and research when am I going to find a moment to actually get down to some … Read entire article »

Begin with Leading exercises by Jutta Wiemers 4th April 2011

Jutta Wiemers’ website In our training series we begin with leading exercises. Rule number One is to never PULL on a rope – the horse will only counter-pull! As a matter of fact a rope is not even needed, as the horse takes his cues from your body language and your position relative to him. Chels and Beau here are playing – they are in “partner position”! In games like the “bucket slalom” your horse can learn peppy starts and … Read entire article »

Jutta Wiemers:

Jutta Wiemers:

Jutta Wiemers’ website My background is vaulting, which in my opinion is still the very best way to start with any equestrian activity! I began vaulting at age ten and was active as a vaulter and then trainer for the next 40 years. Vaulting teaches you to balance. The necessary stretching makes you limber – and the result is confidence, because you know that falling off the horse means landing on the ground, but it does not … Read entire article »

Snoeks Leon

Today we would like to bring tribute to a Belgian artist; Leon Snoeks (1939-2005). This remarkable man studied art and drawing in the early 1960′s. His images ranged from surrealism, landscapes and portraits. Many landscapes where inspired on his travels to Scotland and Ireland. The use of a black background with white Chinese ink creates a great contrast and magnificent results on light impression. Often there was criticism on his view of dimension, although he very much mastered this, Leon plays with depth to create surrealism. Each movement of the wrist puts the pencil flawlessly down to perfection whilst almost impossible to be corrected in this ink and cart board combination. Therefore exceptional care and an elemental eagle eye combined with a patient nature where primary. The surrealistic works each tell their … Read entire article »
