Recommended Books
My all-time favorite book on the subject of dressage is “The Fundamentals of Dressage” by Alfred Knopfhart, which fell into my hands when I was about 10 years old. It did require a dictionary for me than and it took me a long time to read through it, but it is one of the most brilliant books I have ever read. It is written in a very academical way, but is so well structured that it is more than worthwhile to read and talking for myself, read it again and again and again. Thanks to Hyperion Publishers it is also available in English since 1990. The translation by Nicole Bartle is quite good and keeps the original, fantastic flair this book creates. You end up wanting to do well in dressage for the sake of your horse and will be willing to work hard for it disregarding what discipline you would like to venture into.
His second book “Dressur von A-S: Mit dem rittigen Pferd zu höheren Lektionen” has to my opinion never been available in English, unfortunately.
I personally see dressage as the basics to perform in any other discipline and it should never be for its own sake. Meaning a dressage horse should be able to perform in jumping, be ridden in the countryside and in traffic. The horse is an athlete and should therefore be gently trained towards carrying the rider’s weight in such manner that it will not damage him. The German scale of education has laid down the rules for this:
- Takt = Rhythm
- Losgelassnheit = Suppleness
- Anlehnung = Contact
- Schwung = Swing
- Geraderichtung = Straightness
- Versammlung = Collection
You need to have rhythm and suppleness before you can even start on establishing a contact and if you look into the detailed description it also indicates that it is the horse, who takes up the contact, not the rider. Which can be seen if you watch the 1984 Olympics with Dr Reiner Klimke riding Ahlerich for example:
This brings me straight away to my next favorite author: Reiner Klimke. He has written many great books on the subject and I have to say that the book “Basic training of the young horse: From the education of the young foal to the first competition” is a little gem. This book has been an invaluable source when I backed horses and is again one of those you always read in again. Klimke has also written a book on his most successful horse Ahlerich and at least in German there are a number of excellent videos/DVDs he has produced.
